Peace Pipe: A Counseling MetaphorBy Dr. Richard Boyum
When I am doing conflict resolution with roommates, dating couples, or employees, as part of our Employee Assistance, I often use a Native American peace pipe to cement the agreement to be at peace with one another. I talk with clients about the power of the passing of the pipe and the powerful symbolism of sharing a peace pipe in which an understanding has been accomplished. This grounding experience which has powerful spiritual components can be used as effectively as any signed contract. Its roots go back a long way. In the power of Native American wisdom it can be applied to our daily work.
